Bonjour tout le monde!
My name is Sunny Hafen, formerly known as Mademoiselle Hendry. The oldest of six children and a native of Salt Lake City, I love reading, learning, French, teaching, and traveling, even in my own backyard of beautiful Utah. My husband and I got married in July of 2014 and we live in Draper. We've recently taken up road biking and love the trails around here.
I have been learning French since middle school. In what began as a way to fulfill education requirements, my perspective toward language changed significantly after a study abroad in Brittany (France). Though I've always been pretty obsessed with school, French was my worst subject in school. It was thanks to living abroad that I unexpectedly learned that I loved the French language and culture, that I had a traveler's heart, and that working hard at something I was bad at was also really satisfying.
Since that first exposure to living in another culture, I've spent 18 months in Montreal and Quebec respectively, 3 in Marseille, and 2 in Paris, working and volunteering in various capacities. Though an English major with a French degree "on the side", attempts to maintain my French led me to teaching for 3 years in a private school where, again unexpectedly, I discovered a love of teaching and resulted in my returning back to school.
A 2013 graduate BYU's French Studies Master's program, teaching Dual-Immersion is a dream come true. When I'm not in the classroom or thinking about the classroom, I'm probably planning my next adventure, training for my next 10K, and reading at least two books at a time, even if it takes me months to make any progress.
I'm looking forward to this year of teaching your children and getting to know them and you! Learning has always been a rewarding experience for me and I want to help teach your children, among other things, that we can do hard things and have fun while doing it. Please let me know if you have any questions!
